Google’s Big Black Hole Revealed!

Some time ago we dedicated a post to the Big Black Hole as spotted on the Google Search and Gmail sites. Everyone on the web tried to come up with a suitable explanation. However this phenomenon was only spotted by Firefox users. In Internet Explorer the grey box was not showing.

This caused me to believe that it is a ‘feature’/error in Firefox3. No one had seen this box before, it was suddenly there since Firefox3. Although that was my strong personal belief.

Since then I started watching out for this grey box to appear somewere else. I spotted this box several times on other pages and websites. It did occur when the page was loading slowly. Firefox whould display a white page with this box inside. But before I could make a screenshot, the page was loaded and the phenomenal grey box was gone.

But today I was very lucky. While trying to connect to Dutch IT website tweakers.net the grey box appeared on a white page while loading the site. Screenshots below show you the grey box in the upper left corner, like the one spotted on the Google sites.

An explanation could be that maybe when Firefox3 loads a page is displays a clean white page. I don’t know how this box got in there, but maybe it’s a bug. Normally a page loads fast, so you don’t get to see it. I have no explanation why the box doesn’t disappear on the Google sites, but with the sites I tested the box disappeared once the page was fully loaded.

Please give me your insights on this problem!
